Frequently Asked Questions
Who
funds the WIC program?
WIC is a federally funded program. The USDA directs the grant
money to each state health department. The State health department is
responsible for the distribution of the funds to each local WIC agency.
What do you need to bring to an appointment?
At your initial appointment you need to bring proof of
identification of the infant or child the appointment is for, proof of income,
the nutrition questionnaire and diet recall provided by the WIC clinic, and the
person the appointment is for.
What do you do at a WIC appointment?
Heights and weights are taken on the qualifying person as
well as a small blood sample to check iron levels. The nutrition questionnaire
and diet recall are reviewed and counseling is provided according to the need
and result of the review. Vouchers are then given which provide nutritious
supplemental foods to the participant.
Why do you check iron?
Iron is found in the blood. It is important because it
carries oxygen to all your inner organs so they can function properly.
What foods are high in iron?
The best sources of iron are red meats, whole grain or
enriched breads and cereals, and green leafy vegetables like spinach, as well as
dried fruits and prune juice. The body can better use iron if a source of
vitamin C is eaten with it.
Is iron-fortified formula important for my baby?
Yes, iron is very important to your baby. The American
Academy of Pediatrics suggests that infants receive iron daily to help build
healthy red blood cells. Without enough iron, your baby may have any of these
symptoms:
What is anemia?
Anemia results when there is not enough iron in the blood to
carry oxygen to all parts of the body. Baby and toddlers, pregnant and
menstruating women, and people who have lost blood need more iron.
Why is folate important?
Folate, also known as folic acid or folacin, is a B-vitamin.
Everyone needs folate, but women need even more during pregnancy. Adequate
intake of folate during pregnancy can help prevent birth defects of the brain or
spine, such as spina bifida.
Where is folate found?
Folate can be found in many foods. Whole grains and cereals,
beans (such as kidney, garbanzo, lima, navy and pinto), black-eyed peas,
lentils, orange juice and most fresh fruits and vegetables are good
sources.
